The Danube Delta in Romania

This is more, much more than just a tourist or a natural reserve, it is a place unique in the world, only the second largest delta in Europa (surpassed by the Volga Delta)( and the home of roughly 300 species of birds and over 100 species of fishes, some of the impossible to find elsewhere.

With a surface of around 2700 square kilometers, the best preserved delta on the continent of Europe is a magical, amazing place, with countless places to fish or just relax and get to know the atmosphere, a perfect place for a wonderful vacation, a place of traditions and nature, where you can discover strange and unusual species of birds, you can find out more about the local customs of the fishermen, you can just rent a boat and go for a stroll.

Geographically, the Danube Delta has three main arms - Chilia, Sulina and Saint George - and those who have visited them already know that each of these literally marks a special region of the delta.

With various species of plants, trees and animals or fish, this is one of the least inhabited places in Europe, with only around 30 villages of fishermen, the single most important town being the town of Tulcea. Another town is Sulina. Most of the economical gain comes from fishing and the likes, but also from tourism, as for several decades the Danube Delta has proved to be literally a hot-spot for travellers from all over the world. Among the locals, you will not only find Romanians, but also several minorities, such as Greeks, Bulgarians, Ukrainians and also a small community of Lipovans, who came here from Russia about 200 years ago.

Over it's history, this splendid nature reserve was managed by the Ottoman Empire, then administered by Russian, only to come under Romanian administration - literally Moldavian one - in 1856, due to the signing of the Treaty of Paris. Later it would become a part of Romania and one of the most important tourist and natural attractions. In 1990 UNESCO placed the Danube Delta on the list of international natural patrimony, as it was considered to be one of the most important reservations. Besides the various species of birds and fish, it also has an exotic landscape, around 1200 different kinds of trees and plants, mammals - wolf, fox, boar, wild cat, otter and others - which makes it incredibly diverse and somewhat strange.

Due to the special characteristics of the Danube Delta, you will find several small natural reserves, 16 of them, such as : Rosca-Buhaian-Hrecisca - an animal natural reserve, near lake Matrita, where you will find the largest colony of pelicans ; the Perisor - Zatoane - house to an impressive number of swans and other rare birds ; the Caraorman forest - the oldest forest space in the region and a certain tourist attraction.

Tourists who come the the Danube Delta can take advantage of it's beauties and plan ahead a vacation which could be simply amazing. Some might chose simply to take a trip by boat on the water, amongst the canals, lakes and small islands, can fish or eat traditional recepies using various species of fishes, all in just a day of a few. Some recommend you sleep overnight in a tent, somewhat of an adventure, and rent the boat from the locals, while others chose to eat at the various tourist housings in the region. Those who chose to spend some more time here can also go by boat to Sulina, at the Black Sea, can visit the ancient forests of Caraorman, can discover the picturesque and small fishermen' villages.
