In a dreamlike landscape from Dumbrava Sibiului who made the famous dutch museum specialist Bernet Kempers since 1966 to name the museum from Sibiu "the most beautiful museum in open air from Europe", with cool woods crossed by a small river that moves the water wheels of mills, having in the middle a lake of 6 ha which reflects the wind mills and dobrogean constructions from Danube Delta, stands the most rich heritage that also is the most representative institution of its kind in Europe.
In a big space of 96 ha, crossed by 10 km of paths with many places for rest, are presented in two permanent exhibitions, distinct and perfectly delimitated thematic and spatial, the world from yesterday of the romanian village (the ethnographic museum in open space that occupies 42 ha ) reflects itself in the contemporary artistic consciousness.
Unfortunately in the recent history of the museum we must say that two big dramatic events, the fires from 5 september 1997 and 20 february 2002 affected a small part of the entire landscape.
Through the collective efforts of the entire museum and with the support of other museums from Romania and sponsors the restauration work were finished in a short time and today we can say again that we have the most beautiful open air museum from Europe localised in Sibiu, Romania.
