Angela Gheorghiu Burlacu was born in Adjud city, Vrancea County, on 7 September 1965. During childhood, spent in her hometown, she attended the School of Music. Then she attended the High School of Music and Ciprian Porumbescu Conservatory in Bucharest.
In 1992 she makes her debute at the London Royal Opera, Covent Garden, in Bohéme by Puccini. In the same year she sings on the stages of Metropolitan Opera in New York and the Vienna Staatsoper. In 1994 she exceled in the role of Violeta in Traviata by Verdi, opera conductor being Sir Georg Solti. In December 2000 Angela Gheorghiu started shooting in Tosca, a movie released in all world. The passion and beauty of Angela Gheorghiu are ideal for the role. It's like the best features of Callas and Tebaldi's gathered by one person. (Opera News, USA). Record sales of CDs, containing the interpretation of the role in Tosca in the movie of the same name, is a testimony of her value. Angela Gheorghiu interpreted the role of Juliette in the movie, version of Romeo and Juliette opera, and she has participed in the show held at Queen Elizabeth II’s Jubilee.
In an interview, in Romanian newspaper Cotidianul, soprano confessed: Romania has been, is and will be in my soul my country. I am Romanian. I never leave Romania and I would give up Romanian nationality. There is no concert or meeting any meridian without a pleading or a Romanina repertory.
During her career she received numerous awards as: Gramophone Awards, Diapason d'Or Awards, Choc du Monde de la Musique in France, Cecilia Prize in Belgium, Deutsche Schallplattenkritik-Preis in Germany, the Echo Award, Foreign Lyric Production Award and Critics' Award in the U.S.. In 2001,on the ocassion of Classical Brit Awards Angela Gheorghiu won the title Female Artist of the Year.Angela Gheorghiu was awarded with Vermeille at Medaille de la Ville de Paris and received the title of Officier de l'Ordre des Arts et lettres and the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et lettres from the French Ministry culture, but also from her country of origin, Romania.
Divorced from her first husband, from whom she retained Gheorghiu name, Angela Gheorghiu married the tenor Roberto Alagna in 1996. Alagna was born in France in 1963 to a family of Sicilian immigrants.
