CHATTANOOGA, TN.-Richard Jolley is one of America's foremost figurative sculptors of glass. The exhibit that will open on August 6 is his first retrospective, featuring work from the last two decades. Jolley, who lives and works in Knoxville, has moved purposefully through various series: beginning with sculptures that place an emphasis on line and are often referred to as three-dimensional drawings culminating into his triumphant "Totem Series," which are a symphony of colorful heads, torsos and animals that are visually captivating and skillfully crafted. In addition, the exhibition includes the artists latest explorations in mixed media that consists of three-dimensional wall installations, large scale paintings on paper and his newest glass series. Jolleys outstanding new works reveal a universe inhabited by symbolic, enigmatic, animal and human forms. Jolley moves seamlessly among glass, bronze and works on paper, displaying a wide range of talents in several media. Nandini Makrandi, Curator of Contemporary Art at the Hunter Museum of American Art describes Richard Jolleys show as a stunning example of an artist who can work comfortably with a variety of mediums. While Richard is known best for his glass sculptures, his works on paper and mixed media pieces show the breadth of his talent. His work is part of a strong art historical tradition while addressing everyday themes with which all of us can identify. I am pleased that Chattanoogans will have the opportunity to see his work in the show that will be here until September 25th.
