The Brooklyn Museum, New York is hosting a series of events under the title 'Living Legacies: The Arts of the Americas' centred around their collections of indigenous art from North, Central and South America datingfrom 3000 BC to the present day.
'Threads of Time: Woven Histories of the Andes' is one of three exhibitions happening concurrently across 2005. The textiles presented in the exhibition illustrate images of plants, humans, animals and deities and express complex notions of Andean society and beliefs. Some of the outstanding examples include the Paracas textile (1), which underwent
conservation treatment in the early 1990s (see HALI 59, pp.126-7) and the Paracas mantle (above) with shark design (see HALI 114, p.109).
When both phases of events are over by 2006 over four hundred objects will have been exhibited, some of which have never been on public display before.
