Verkolje Sr. Jan
Jan Verkolje Sr. (9 February 1650 - 8 May 1693), Dutch Baroque painter, engraver.
For six months he was the student of Jan Andrea Lievens, completing in this time frame a series of unfinished workd of Gerrit Pieterszoon van Zijl. He got married in Delft in 1672 and a year later he became a member of the St Luke Guild, being it's dean between 1678 - 1688.
His genre scenes, such as The Messenger or Elegant Couple were mainly influenced by Gabriel Metsu and Gerard ter Borch II. A successful artist, his portraits were sold at high prices and were very much in demand for their elegant style and the finishing, in a much more elaborate manner than other artists. He was also an excellent engraver. It seems he lived for a while in London, as he produced a series of engravings of some works made by english artists.
In the spirit of Dutch art, Jan Verkolje was careful about observing the real world, trying to create realistic compositions, inspired but what he saw in everyday life. Thus his compositions were very popular in the Protestant middle-class.
