Reni Guido

Guido Reni (4 November 1575 - 18 August 1642), Italian painter.

Reni was very apreciated in his time for his religious and especially for his mythological scenes. He was born in Bologna and began studying painting at the age of nine, and since 1595 was the student of the famous Carracci family. In 1600 he travelled to Rome, to complete his training, and was fascinated by Roman art, mainly of the antiques. He admired Raphael, who was his true master and example, but inspired himself from the works of other artists, such as Caravaggio.

For the rest of his life Reni stayed in Rome and Bologna. In 1609, after the death of Annibale Carracci, Reni became the leader of the classical school of painting. His masterpiece will be the altar painted with the composition " The Massacre of the Innocents", remarcable for the precise and elegant draftsmanship, the ability to control and express feelings and gestures, it's rich and intense colors.

In the last part of his life Guido Reni would greatly modify his style, his compositions becoming free, and his textures almost transparent. As for the colors, his last works are very modet, almost monochrome.
